George is on the phone during class and he claims that he is talking to his mother. Mrs. Snow goes along with it but I am not sure she bought it. Daniel plays with a stapler as he waits for Mrs. Snow to unlock a quiz for him. I noticed that whenever Mrs. Snow tries to assert herself the class will mock her. Many of them will try to talk over her to explain how they were not breaking the rules even if they were breaking the rules. Mrs. Snow is forgetful so tasks and requests can be on the backburner for half an hour until they are done, this makes the students frustrated. They do not feel heard, so they get loud and rude with her. They are comfortable with sharing their grades with each other no matter what it is, and no one seems to bully the other about low grades. They are burned out when they get to fourth period, so they do not want to work on their work. Mrs. Snow asked one of them why they were on their phone, to which they responded “because I’m bored in here.” Mrs. Snow sends me to help Monica because her head is down and she is obviously frustrated, yet as I walk towards her she states “I don’t need help, just give me another lesson.” I want to help them but I feel as though they will respond in the same way as Monica.
Contemplative Question:
How do I get them to be comfortable with the idea of getting help?
