When I first arrived, the fire alarm had been pulled because of a snake. Everyone wanted to discuss the snake and exaggerate how big it was. It has been three and a half weeks and none of the kids ask for help. They are welcoming until the topic comes to helping with school work. They are preoccupied with other tasks because they do most of their work at home. They say “sorry… this is how third period is” but it is not just third period that is doing this. Fourth period also exhibits this behavior as if after lunch is over school should cease to exist. School and work can feel like an eternity, especially here, but I believe that if the kids gave some of the excercises a chance then they would actually enjoy them. They are so accustomed to boring work that they no longer check to see if the material is actually interesting. Considering the amount of emails and phone calls that Mrs. Snow is receiving from fellow teachers, I assume that she must be one of the only teachers that students go to when they are not in their designated location. Teachers are requesting for their students to return to finish tests and quizzes, and initially they seem upset. When the student does return to do their work, the teachers allow them to go back to Mrs. Snow's class. I do believe that it is important for students to have a place to feel comfortable, considering that they are at school longer than they are at home. I also believe that there should be a way to provide them with this safe space without interfering with their work. In order to achieve this, I would only allow children who are done with their assignments into my classroom. I would also try to limit the times that they can come in so that they do not distract my class.
