I did not get the group of students that Mrs. Snow wanted me to have, but I did get to talk to Celia. We talked about the Accuplacer because she will be graduating soon. I told her about the app so that she could practice the questions at home. She wants to go to Athens Tech so she is really adamant on taking the Accuplacer. She does feel discouraged because a calculator is not allowed for the test and the reading comprehension is full of paragraphs and the size of the passages overwhelm her. I told her how she can find the information that she needs in the passages. I also told her all of the info that I knew about the Accuplacer so that she wouldn't stress about it as much. She has a daughter and wants to go to school for her. We actually talked casually today, because she was flustered about reading. This reminds me of "The Reason I jump" because just like Naoki, Celia was obviously worried about being a burden or wasting my time. We talked about hair and how she is going to wait until it gets closer to graduation to get her hair done because her current braids are old. I am so glad that we could relate on something. This reminded me of the discussion we had in class about trying to relate to your students. Almost all of the students are a couple assignments away from being done with college readiness.
